In search of the original tiramisu: myths and flavors

Tiramisu is one of the most famous Italian desserts, and is hugely popular around the world. Its name literally means “to lift up” or “to cheer up”, referring to the invigorating effect of the coffee and cocoa it contains.

There are several stories about its origin: some sources say it comes from the Veneto region, others from Tuscany, and it really became famous in the 1960s. It is traditionally made with a strong espresso, into which baby sponge cake is dipped. The layered dessert is topped with a cream made from mascarpone cheese, eggs and sugar, and the top is sprinkled with bitter cocoa powder.
Interestingly, the original recipe does not contain whipped cream, liqueur, or cream; these are later changes in different parts of the world.

The magic of tiramisu lies in its lightness and creaminess, yet its distinctive flavor. Many people love it because the harmony of coffee and cream creates a perfect balance between sweetness and bitterness. It is no coincidence that there are countless versions of it today: with strawberries, raspberries, and even a non-alcoholic version.

This dessert has become a true icon of Italian cuisine, finding its fans in all cultures.
